Dr Downward is the Medical Director of Patient Safety, and a Medical Advisor to the Medical and Surgical Services Division of the Canterbury District Health Board.

He graduated from the University of Otago in 1971, completed his specialist training in 1979 and was appointed to the specialist staff of the then North Canterbury Hospital Board that same year.

A specialist in Intensive Care Medicine, Dr Downward held the position of Clinical Director of the Department of Intensive Care, Christchurch Hospital from 1995 up to the time of his appointment to the position of Medical Director of Patient Safety in November 2007.

On the national scene he has held various positions representing elements of the profession including being the foundation President of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists, and more recently the President of the New Zealand Medical Association.

He has been a Council Member of the AAQHC since August 2006.
